How Terra Alta Arrests Work
Start with the town. Terra Alta counted 1,415 residents in the 2020 Census. That headcount tells you nothing about arrests in a given year. An arrest here could come from the municipal police, the Preston County Sheriff, or another agency. The agency that made the bust is where an incident report request starts. It is also the best lead for pinning down where the arrest took place.
Custody moves the paper trail to the state. West Virginia's Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation runs the system tied to Tygart Valley Regional Jail and Correctional Facility, known as TVRJ. Seven counties use that facility. They are Barbour, Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, Taylor, Tucker, and Upshur. Search results will usually name the regional facility or an arresting agency, not the town. Someone cited and released, transferred, held elsewhere, or never sent to TVRJ may not appear in the regional result at all.
Keep three documents straight. The arrest report, the custody search, and the court docket each answer a different question at a different stage.
Where Terra Alta Busted Mugshots Appear
There is no official Terra Alta Police arrest log, daily bulletin, current-booking page, or weekly blotter online. That gap does not mean no report exists. It means the local route runs through a request to the proper custodian, while WVDCR handles the regional custody side. No booking-photo gallery is used for this record path.
| Channel | Photo | Status | What it can answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| WVDCR regional-jail search | Only if available | Official | Regional custody and associated record details, not a Terra Alta-only result. |
| WVDCR Daily Incarcerations | May be available through detail | Official | Latest processed admission information; no fixed update interval is promised. |
| Terra Alta Police custodian via Town Hall | If releasable | Official request path | Local report, agency confirmation, or a record request when custody search is empty. |
| West Virginia Magistrate Case Search | Not a photo channel | Official court path | Later case information and disposition, separately from custody. |
| News or county listing pages | Variable | Secondary | Discovery and context only; not a confirmation of current custody. |
The WVDCR regional portal wants at least the first three letters of a last name. Add a first name when the surname is common. Plan on a verification step and results that vary by record. When a result appears, read the facility, committing agency, and dates with care. A blank image or empty search is not proof that no booking photo or arrest ever happened. WVDCR does not promise public identification photography for every entry.
Busted in Terra Alta: Start Officially
Search custody first. If the regional system comes up empty, work backward to the arresting agency. The county-wide guide offers fuller detail on TVRJ and WVDCR.
- Gather the name, approximate event date, and any known agency. A municipal location alone does not establish which agency made the arrest.
- Run the name through the official WVDCR regional-jail search, using a last-name prefix of at least three letters.
- Read the facility and committing-agency information before associating a result with Terra Alta. TVRJ is a multi-county facility, not a municipal jail.
- For a recent admission, check Daily Incarcerations. It is an official latest-available view, not a guaranteed 24-hour or multi-day archive.
- If no entry appears, contact Town Hall or the agency thought to hold the report. A cited release or nonregional custody can produce no TVRJ listing.
- Search the West Virginia Magistrate Case Search for the court side of the matter. Court records are separate from a custody snapshot.
Terra Alta Police Records
For direct contact, the official Terra Alta contact page lists Town Hall at 701 A E. State Ave, Terra Alta, WV 26764, phone 304-789-6664, fax 304-789-6664, and townofterraalta@atlanticbbn.net. A Preston County resource listing places Terra Alta Police at the same address and number. Trust the town's own page first. The resource list corroborates but does not replace it.
The town posts no separate police records line, booking request form, copy fee, or turnaround schedule. Before filing anything narrow, ask Town Hall who currently holds police records. Give the person's name, the approximate date, the arresting agency if known, and the exact report or photo you want. Ask about copy costs too. Find out whether the material is publicly releasable.
The governing statute is W. Va. Code ยง29B-1-3. A tight, specific request helps the town find the file and explain any withholding decision. For a Sheriff arrest, use the Preston County Sheriff's Office records route instead. Remember that a WVDCR custody record sits with the state, not Town Hall.
Terra Alta Busted Entries Are Regional
Timing shapes what any Terra Alta search will show. An intake image or record can exist before a public OIS result does. A later release or transfer changes the portal display. The public daily system itself warns that data may be incomplete or fail to reflect a person's true location, release, or status. Neither WVDCR tool promises a fixed public retention period.
One facility serves seven counties. The agency and county fields do the real work; a town-keyword search does not. No Preston city offers a verified sheriff or municipal booking feed. Treat a regional facility result as exactly that, not a Terra Alta filter. If the event belongs to another incorporated place, identify that local arresting department and pair it with the same official WVDCR check.
Terra Alta Busted News Leads
Start with official records before turning to the press. Two papers cover the area well: WV News / Preston County News and the Preston County Journal follow town and county stories. For regional crime coverage, the Dominion Post Terra Alta tag and its Police Beat column are worth a look. WDTV picks up Preston County stories too. Remember, these outlets report events; they do not confirm who is in custody or keep a daily photo archive. For broader county context, see the Arrest News page.
Unofficial aggregator sites exist at the county level. Busted Newspaper, RecentlyBooked, Arrests.org, and Arre.st all list Preston entries, but none filters down to Terra Alta reliably. Expect lag, duplicates, and stale listings that may actually come from another part of the county. Never rehost their images or treat a listing as proof someone is currently held. Neither Mugshots.com nor Mugshots.zone has a verified Preston-local section, so skip both for town records.
Official Terra Alta Contact Source
The image below comes from the official Terra Alta municipal source and lists Town Hall contact details. Treat it as a phone directory, nothing more. It is not a booking photo, an arrest record, or any kind of mugshot listing for the town.

That contact information serves one real purpose. It helps you request a city-held record. What the town lacks is an online arrest log. Nothing like that exists on its site. For current custody information, go through WVDCR instead. Need a local incident report? Call Town Hall. Ask who the police custodian of records is, and go from there.
Court Status After a Terra Alta Booking
Each channel has its own job. Town Hall can point you to a municipal custodian. WVDCR shows publicly available regional custody. The Sheriff may hold an agency report, and the court system tracks how a case moves forward. To check the status of a case after a booking, use the Magistrate Case Search or contact the responsible court directly. A speculative city gallery serves none of these purposes.
